Practical Test - Tourenfahrer 12/2018:
Our Yamaha XS 400, due to its age with a mileage of 18,000 kilometers, is therefore predestined for the use of an engine interior cleaner. We chose "Engine Flush" from Liqui Moly. To later prove the effectiveness of the engine interior cleaner on both cylinders, we procured a suitable measuring device. First, we measure the compression on the cold engine with 6.8 bar on the right and 7.3 bar on the left cylinder (see photos). A good value for used XS-400 engines lies between 8.5 and 9 bar. Before the oil change, we warm up the engine of our Yamaha and finally add 100ml "Engine Flush" to the warmed engine oil. Following the instructions, we let the engine run at idle for about ten minutes and then completely drain the engine oil. The cleaner makes the heated oil even more fluid. Therefore, it flows out of the drain vigorously, especially at the beginning. This should be noted when positioning the oil pan, especially with lateral oil drain screws, so that nothing spills. However, this is unproblematic with our XS 400, as the drain screw is installed vertically. After we have replaced the oil filter and moistened its rubber seal with fresh oil, and provided the oil drain screw with a new copper sealing ring, we refill the specified two liters of engine oil. Then the engine is briefly started so that the oil is well distributed in the engine and the lubrication is in order for the subsequent compression test. In the evening, we measure the compression again on the cooled engine of the Yamaha, which has now increased to almost 8 bar on both cylinders. Moreover, it is now almost equal on both cylinders, unlike the morning measurement. The previous deviations were due to the more heavily coked right cylinder; thanks to the cleaning, the values are fortunately back on the same level.
