Legal Installation Regulations (in the EU):
- Since April 1, 2013, daytime running lights (DRLs) are also allowed on motorcycles. The Essen Institute for Two-Wheeler Safety (IfZ) points out that only DRLs that are ECE tested and approved should be installed. The marking of DRLs is "RL". The light color is white. According to IfZ, one or two DRLs are allowed.
- The DRL may be mounted centrally above or below the main headlamp or laterally. In case of lateral installation, the edge of the illuminated area of the DRL must not extend more than 25 centimeters from the vehicle center.
- When using two DRLs, they must be arranged symmetrically to the vehicle center, and the distance between the illuminated areas must not exceed 42 centimeters. Compliance with this maximum distance is waived if the DRL is integrated into other front lights or is symmetrically arranged within the vehicle silhouette. If the distance is less than 40 millimeters to a turn signal, special regulations must be observed (visibility of the turn signal).
- In general, DRLs must be mounted at least 25 centimeters to a maximum of 1.50 meters above the ground and must shine horizontally forward. They may swivel with the steering.
- The DRL must automatically turn on when the engine is running. It must automatically turn off (and can be dimmed as here) when the "driving light" (main headlamp low beam) is turned on. This does not apply to the operation of the headlight flasher. According to the Institute for Two-Wheeler Safety, this could be achieved with a separate toggle switch for low beam and DRL.
- Even when the DRL is on, the taillight must be lit. The license plate light can, but does not have to be, turned on. The installation does not need to be approved by an inspection organization and entered into the vehicle documents. However, the installation must be carried out properly to avoid difficulties at the next main inspection.
- Connection WITH existing light switch:
The prerequisite for the operation of the DRL is a manually switched low beam (light switch), otherwise the function of the DRL would be nullified.
According to the road traffic regulations, the DRL must be connected so that it turns off when the main headlamp is turned on.
(Exception: operation of the headlight flasher). The rear taillight must always be on, i.e., if necessary, connect to ignition positive. - Connection WITHOUT existing light switch:
The DRL can also be used on vehicles without a light switch. For this, the following components are required, for example:
50220000670 Highsider switch by light sensor for DRL E-BOX TYPE 1 (automatically switches between low beam and DRL by light sensor)
